The Greeley Medical Clinic Laboratory is a full service, accredited lab. There are over 200,000 test performed annually. The staff consists of Phlebotomists, who collect specimens and staff the front desk, and Technologists, who perform the testing. There are eleven employees on the GMC Lab staff.
Most of the testing is automated. The GMC Laboratory recently added an information system, which links all analyzers to a data terminal to centralize reporting, improve report retrieval, and expedite patient care. The next phase of the project will be to add order entry, and bring report access directly to the physician`s offices.
The GMC Laboratory is accredited under CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988) and inspected through the Colorado State Department. Quarterly, the GMC Lab also performs proficiency testing: we receive samples on which we perform tests, report to an agency, and are graded on the performance. If unsatisfactory results were reported, patient testing would be prohibited. In addition, the testing staff members are graded periodically to verify individual performance.
Frequently asked questions:
Why does it take so long to get test results? Before a result can be reported, it must meet quality requirements: limits of linearity for the method, the controls must be within the acceptable ranges, and /the analyzer must be within calibration.
Can all of my tests be performed here? On occasion, some specimens will be sent outside because there are some tests we do not offer in-house, or because some insurances contracts require us to send them out.
Why does the staff ask about when I ate last? Some tests, such as cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood glucose are affected by recent food consumption.
Why do they need so much blood, and different tubes? The tube type, volume of blood, and how the blood is handled can all affect the test results.
We can assist with donor programs, esoteric testing, and paternity testing. If you have any special lab needs, please ask.
