Noel Dice, AuD | Over 25 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss. Hearing loss often occurs gradually, and frequently the individual with hearing loss does not like to admit a hearing loss is present. This can lead to frustration for the individual with hearing loss, as well as those trying to communicate with him or her. Hearing loss can cause communication barriers within the home as well as lead to social isolation.
Some Signs of Hearing Loss
- Feeling as though "everyone mumbles" or thinking" people don`t speak as loudly/clearly as they used to"
- History of work related or recreational noise exposure
- Frustration and/or embarrassment caused by the constant need to ask for repetitions during conversations
- Pretending to understand, even if you weren`t sure what was said
- Complaints by other people that the TV or radio is "too loud"
- Difficulty understanding women`s and children`s voices
What is an Audiologist? An audiologist is an individual who specializes in the evaluation and non-medical treatment of hearing loss. Audiologists have earned either a master`s or doctoral degree, and are also required to pass a demanding national competency exam. Audiologists use specialized equipment to assess hearing loss, and are also trained in the dispensing and fitting of amplification devices, such as hearing aids.
What Sort of Testing is Performed? The audiologist will conduct a number of tests in order to determine whether or not a hearing loss is present, and if so, the type of loss that exists. The patient sits in a sound treated booth and performs a number of tasks, such as listening to speech and listening for pure tones. The testing takes approximately 30 minutes. About 1 in 10 individuals who come in for testing will require medical intervention. The audiologist has been trained to look for certain "red flags" and will make a referral to an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat Physician) if necessary.
